assignment change

i have changed my blog assignment - based in part on our conversations. the new assignment:
is required - 10% of grade
i will supply a weekly topic, the students will find and post links and comment on them
i will keep my own blog to model

here is a sample weekly topic:
Create an entry in your web journal entitled “Journal Entry: Week 2”. The entry should:

  • Describe what is meant by the “Web Standards Movement”
  • Link to one page in favor of the movement.
  • Link to one page opposed to the movement
  • Give your own thoughts considering the movement. is it good? Is it bad? A little of both?
  • Link to one page that would assist someone developing a site that wanted to use Web Standards.

i think this will give me the chance to cover topics i would not be able to cover in class, or at least not as effectively - give students a chance for discovery...

as the semester progresses, if the students get the hang of it, the topics may become more free form

any thoughts?

how is it going for you all?

rss

bloglines is a great rss aggregator. what is an rss aggregator? a tool that allows you to keep track of multiple feeds from websites - esp. blogs...

in particular, this plays nice with the wonderful firefox browser

i plan on discussing rss at a future meeting

meeting 10/18

here is a summary of the meeting of 10/18

jennifer brought up that she experienced difficulty commenting on this blog. talking it thru, it seems that the problem was a browser compatibility issue. this raised a larger issue though - the need for the team to provide technical assistance. i will take two steps to help in this a. prepare a minimum requirements list, b. be available for technical support for team members and their students - excellent point, jennifer...

the team members present reviewed their plans for implementing blogs in the spring and provided other team members with suggestions.

i will be getting in touch with you about our november meeting...
i would like all of you to prepare for that meeting your proposed blog assignment/project for spring semester - just as you would give it to students - so we can all review and offer suggestions...prior to the meeting, if you wish, you can email your assignment to the team, or post it here.
secondly, time permitting, i'd like to speak about rss to address how to get a grip on a large number of blogs.

i'll send an email out over next few weeks to try and schedule our next meeting at the best time for most members....

also, on november 8th - 3PM in bu201, i am presenting for the center for teaching excellence about blogs in an educational context. you are welcome to attend, but a lot of what will be discussed, we have already covered as a team.

followup

chris asked two great questions in meeting 2:
can one be informed via email when a new entry is posted? yes, but there is only one address - so i am experimenting with chris' email. i will see if i can create an email group so we all get it.

can we track who visits our site? it does not appear using basic blogger service that you can do this. you would need your own server, or a different service.

meeting 2

we discussed the following things at our meeting:
compensation - awaiting for an acct number so the contracts can be prepared.
oln conference in spring: will our project be far enough along for me to present. no conclusive answer
our goal: investigate during fall/possibly implement during fall as a pilot/definitely implement in spring
assessment: we need to develop an assessment tool that shows the impact on retention. dorinda and i have met, gotten feedback from marilyn valentino. i'll meet with her.
please practice posting, by posting anything relevant (or irrelevant)
we also brainstormed possible uses in our classes...
i'll be glad to review in more detail anyone who could not make the meeting
